Fireboy and Watergirl Review: The Platformer Fairytale

Review Standarts
Our main goal is to provide full and useful app reviews. Our authors strictly follow the rules: minimum 15 hours of the real app usage experience or gameplay, test on main Android and iOS versions, test on phones and tablets.

This game is about two characters of opposite nature – Fireboy and Watergirl. Only together can they pass the hard dungeons, helping each other and going through traps easy for one of them and lethal for another. Fireboy goes out in the water, and Watergirl dries out when touching fire. Only together they can make it through.

2D platformers are experiencing some renaissance in the 2010s. There are many of them; but if you want something unusual for the genre, download Fireboy and Watergirl and try it. Not as hardcore as platformers get, this one offers a unique, distinctive style of going through, involving abilities of two characters.

Graphics 4/5

The genre of the 2D platformer is quite old, and we are used to all the conventional elements in it. The dark dungeon has been the favorite location at least since Prince of Persia, or even before that. As for this game, it works perfectly. The fire burns, the water flows, the traps breathe with danger, and the characters look like what their nature is.

The fonts may seem too dull for such an elemental adventure, but that’s forgivable.

Gameplay 5/5

The most adorable thing about Fireboy and Watergirl is how it combines elements of a classic platformer and a logical puzzle. You need to walk your two characters, Fireboy and Watergirl, to the exit from the dungeon they’re locked in. It’s full of traps deadly for them; luckily, none of them can be harmed by what they’re made of, but touching the opposite element is deadly for any.

You can switch between the two characters. And you’ll need to. After some distance, each of the characters gets stuck without another’s help. So you’ll have to switch them several times at any given level. Sometimes it can be predicted right from the start, and sometimes you’ll have to discover it while proceeding. And don’t forget to collect diamonds on your way.

But one of the most amazing things about this game is being a cooperative platformer. If you select Online mode, you’ll have to cooperate with another player, each playing their character independently. Both players need to make it to the exit to win. If one fails, both lose.

The only thing that spoils the pleasure is obvious lack of online players. Despite the game is very popular in its category, most players prefer offline mode, switching between characters.

Controls 5/5

Like most platformers, this game utilizes virtual buttons. There are buttons for moving left or right, for jumping, and (in offline mode) for switching characters. The latter always indicates the active one.

Unlike some other games, this one is equally easy to control both on iPhone and iPad. The buttons are too big to miss, and making them transparent but clearly visible is a good tradition in the industry.

Replay Value 5/5

Platformers are not the easiest type of games. Fireboy and Watergirl Online is not as hardcore as some other games, but the unusual idea makes it more fun. The record table saves your achievements, so there’s always a chance to improve them.

But playing online is much more attractive (if you’re lucky enough to find a partner). Familiar levels become different, depending on another’s behavior, and sometimes you need to act out of the offline scheme.

Conclusion

In fact, no Fireboy and Watergirl review can reflect its atmosphere. The characters seem to come from a forgotten legend or folklore fairytale. If you’re into platformers, this is not the one to miss.

We’d recommend you playing some levels offline and then, being familiar with them, searching for someone to play online with. But exploring new levels together with someone you don’t even know is also an exciting feeling.
